I love to knit when I have time and one of the more useful and simple items to knit that you will use every day are basic wash cloths. My dad was actually our household knitter (coming from a family of knitters) and used to make ours for the home.
These cotton cloths work so well in absorbing liquids and catching particles that you won't have to go over an area very much. Dad swore by these cloths.
Anyway, with my motto of striving to "live freely", knowing how to knit or any of the other fiber arts is just another way to become more self-sufficient. Learning the skills our great-grand-parents used daily is also a built in protection against tyranny and an economy out of control, especially when bartering. Making things from scratch is great therapy and a healthy way to occupy time and teach your children. My son can knit a little and my oldest daughter crochets basic jewelry (and sells them too!). Knowing any hand craft skill is potential money and service. A win-win for everyone.
