Welcome Home Birdies!

Yes, our fine feathered friends have joined our growing animal family.  After having a baby and moving in the last five months we weren't sure if our goal to have hens would happen this year.  We were hopeful but uncertain and now very grateful to have been able to pull it off.  Joe did a fabulous job at converting one of the stalls in the barn to a coop that will also allow convenient free ranging, taking steps to minimize predator invasions.  It's a great set up for them.  Our first set of birds are one year old laying hens of the Black Sex-Link and Ameraucana varieties.  Four and four to be exact.  They are hardy birds and identified as dual meat and laying.  We have them cooped up for a week to get them acclimated to their new surroundings.  Looking forward to releasing them and letting them explore while training up the new pups to be their guardians.

We then added to our little flock of eight, eight Buff Orpington pullets plus a rooster.  These will hopefully be laying in another couple of months.  All birds are considered winter layers and great producers.  The Buffs are especially sweet natured and will grow to have cute feathered butts, like they're wearing a skirt.  Really pretty birds.

Our sweet little Sarah, having fun in the barn with the new birdie friends and her puppies.  The dogs are growing well and LOVING their raw meat diet.  You can definitely say they are thriving and fitting wonderfully into the family.  They are great with the children and love to play.  So entertaining to watch them romp through the yard, then sit with their fuzzy white faces staring up at us.



An unexpected surprise to have five beautiful eggs the day after we brought them home...and EXPECT to have many more soon.
