While many of our house projects will be on going (indefinitely seemingly) since moving in, some are thankfully coming to a close. Much of the interior is finished, leaving minor repairs, remodels, etc. that can be done at our leisure. Having a log home definitely has it's pluses, but also a few challenges. The benefits are: durable interior and timeless decor...never having to worry with changing fads of wall paper and paint. Natural wood has it's own beauty allowing for more eclectic furniture choices. Natural wood walls and floors hide fingerprints and dings...a HUGE plus when having five children. After leaving the Knoxville home, which had a more contemporary feel, I repainted every room before putting it on the market. Certainly NOT kid friendly walls!
Minuses of log home ownership: High maintenance exterior. We're currently getting the outside repainted as the years of bird poop, oxidation and peeling have made for a less than perfect finish. Course some of this also makes for a uniquely rustic touch...rather nice for country living. Wood boring bumblebees are a big problem...they seem to keep mistaking our home for theirs while leaving a destructive mess in their path!
In all, things are turning out quite nice and it's wonderful to have more space to spread out. We've essentially tripled our living square footage to 3,300 inside the house and 1,100 in the guest quarters above the garage. While there are many favorites about the house and property, I particularly enjoy the living room. It is a cozy, lodgey feel with many of our rustic decorative pieces, including Joe's deer head mount. It's interesting because many of the pieces of furniture we've accumulated over the years including heirlooms looked a little out of place in Knoxville. Like they were just hanging out, waiting for a true home. Course now they fit right in!
