Had our bee keeper come out recently for a check on how the queens are doing. Being novices, we're so grateful to have someone walking us through the life of bees!
Interestingly, queens are made when they are fed royal jelly by the workers. So you have to periodically check to see if the queens are there and laying eggs. Otherwise the hive won't grow. Really an intricate process.
We had a bit of a close call because a yellow jacket nest was found several feet from the hives...the size of a BASKETBALL. Apparently, they have been very busy all these months, building right by the trail we would traverse up the mountain. It's amazing that no one has been stung. We found out that yellow jackets are pretty nasty to honey bees. They'll steal the honey and kill the bees. So, Joe and our bee man took care of the nest by torching it with the flame thrower at dusk. Bye-bye yellow jackets!
